Espresso, latte, cappuccino, flat white: what is the difference?

A simple guide to the most popular coffee drinks, so you order the cup that suits your taste the first time.

Most coffee drinks in any café start from the same base, espresso. What changes is the amount of milk, how it is steamed and how thick the foam is.

Espresso: a small concentrated shot (about 30 ml) extracted by pushing hot water through the coffee for roughly 25 to 30 seconds. It tastes strong and is topped with a golden layer called crema. A double espresso is two shots in one cup.

Americano: espresso topped up with hot water, so it is lighter and larger while keeping the coffee flavour without milk.

Cappuccino: espresso with steamed milk and a thick layer of foam, in roughly similar proportions. It feels lighter and the coffee taste is clear.

Latte: espresso with more steamed milk and a thin layer of foam. It is smoother and milkier, a good choice if you are new to coffee.

Flat white: usually made with a double shot, less milk than a latte and a very thin, silky microfoam, so the coffee taste is stronger and the texture velvety.

Cortado: roughly equal parts espresso and warm milk, served in a small cup.

Mocha: a latte with added chocolate, for those who like it sweet.

How to choose? If you like a strong coffee taste, go for an espresso, flat white or cortado. If you prefer something smoother, choose a latte or cappuccino. And do ask the barista, who can suggest the drink closest to your taste.
